Our History

The 1st Point Cook Scout Group has a proud history, beginning on the RAAF Base Point Cook, where it was officially opened on 21 September 1975. At the time, Point Cook was a small community, with many families living on the base and little development between there and Laverton, which had a population of around 3,000.

By the early 2000s, Point Cook experienced rapid expansion, with large parcels of land sold off for housing. However, as access to the base became restricted to the public (except for the RAAF Museum), a new venue was needed for the Scout Group. In 2006, 1st Point Cook Scout Group moved to the Jamieson Way Community Centre (JWCC). At that time, the group was small, consisting of just one Joey section with 4 Joeys, one Cub section with 8 Cubs, and one Scout section with 8 Scouts. As the suburb grew, so did the demand for Scouting, leading to waiting lists across all sections.

Recognising the need for a larger, permanent facility, then District Commissioner (DC) and Group Leader (GL) Brian Geary worked to secure a dedicated Scout Hall. In a partnership between Carranballac College, the Education Department, and Scouts Victoria, land originally set aside for a pool was repurposed for the 1st Point Cook Scout Group Hall. Sadly, Brian Geary passed away in 2017, before he could see the hall completed. However, his vision and dedication to 1st Point Cook Scout Group live on through the thriving Scout community he helped shape. In recognition of Brian Geary’s tireless efforts and dedication to Scouting and the Point Cook community, the hall was officially named the Brian Geary Scout Hall.

The first sod was turned on 5 March 2018, and the group officially moved into the hall in January 2019, with an official opening on 21 September 2019—marking 44 years since the group’s establishment.

Since moving into the Brian Geary Scout Hall, 1st Point Cook Scout Group has continued to grow. The group now proudly runs two Joey Units, two Cub Units, two Scout Units, and a Venturer Unit. Thanks to having our own dedicated space, we can run all our sections efficiently, providing more opportunities for young people to experience Scouting. Today, 1st Point Cook Scout Group remains a thriving and inclusive community, fostering adventure, leadership, and lifelong friendships for the next generation of Scouts.

Our Scarf

Point Cook coast

The 1st Point Cook Scout Group scarf features a red and blue design, symbolising the sun on the ocean horizon. The red represents the sun, rising or setting over the water, while the blue represents the ocean, highlighting our connection to the coastline and the natural beauty of where we live. As a group based near the ocean, our scarf is a tribute to our surroundings and serves as a reminder of the adventure, resilience, and community spirit that define 1st Point Cook Scout Group.

Our Logo

Our 1st Point Cook Scout Group logo was designed by our own youth back in 2016. It reflects our group’s heritage and aspirations:

  • The aeroplane represents our roots, as we began at RAAF Base Point Cook.

  • The ocean waves symbolise our proximity to the sea and our coastal environment.

  • The flying plane embodies our spirit of aiming high and reaching for our dreams.
